• David Mattern, a financial adviser with the local office of Wells Fargo Advisors, recently attended the firm’s Higher Education Conference held at the University of California, Berkeley. The conference included economic insights and analysis from world-renowned specialists. Mattern has been a financial adviser for 14 years. His office is located at 1811 Wakarusa Drive, Suite 103, Lawrence.

• A group of Lawrence area residents have opened Spirit Girl Boutique at 1502 W. 23rd St. The shop sells a variety of women’s apparel, but it specializes in producing custom jewelry with team logos on it. Area residents Susan Lomshek and her sister Sarah Holbrooks own the new venture, and Matt Lomshek, a longtime owner of a Lawrence promotional products company is a manager for the company. The retail venture has grown out of wholesale company the group started about two years ago, called Spirit Girl Couture. The wholesale business focuses a lot on the college athletic scene. Matt Lomshek said the company now has licensing agreements with about 30 Division One universities, including all the major ones in this region.

• TherapyWorks, P.A., 1311 Wakarusa Drive, Suite 1000, Lawrence, announces Jena Koeck has joined the staff as a licensed physical therapist. Koeck earned a doctorate of physical therapy this May from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb. She has participated in six clinical rotations in various clinics from Arizona to Nebraska. Her most recent rotation was with the Institute for Latin American Concern, Adult Neuro/Ortho, in Santiago, Dominican Republic. She also held the position of physical therapist tutor at Creighton University and anatomy tutor at Augustana College.

• The Leadership Lawrence Class of 2012 will be formally introduced at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Landmark National Bank, 4621 W. Sixth Street. There is no charge for the event, which is open to the public. The Leadership Lawrence Alumni lunch, open to Leadership Lawrence alumni only, will be noon Sept. 29 at Morning Star Church, 998 N. 1771. Reservations are required through lawrencechamber.com. • The Kansas Department of Health and Environment Bureau of Water announces it has certified 51 water treatment operators and 61 wastewater treatment operators from January to August.

Area certified wastewater treatment operators include: Jerry Stockman, class 2, City of Tonganoxie; and Allison Wilson, small system, The Villages, Incorporated-Eagle Ridge-Topeka-Lawrence.
