From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 16, 1971:

• William F. Buckley Jr. was scheduled to speak at a Lawrence Chamber of Commerce all-membership luncheon at the Kansas University Union Ballroom on Nov. 5. A deadline was to be set on Chamber member reservations, after which it was possible that the event might be opened to the public. As the ballroom had a capacity of only about 600, there was also talk of adding a closed-circuit television broadcast of Buckley’s talk.
• The Lawrence City Commission had recently approved two amendments to the city zoning ordinance. One was a proposed ordinance to create a new zoning district designated “RM-D” which would be specifically for duplexes. The other change would alter the space requirement for parking stalls and aisles in parking lots, changing the stalls to a minimum of nine feet instead of the current eight feet.
