A number of events are scheduled this weekend in Lawrence to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Here’s a rundown:

• 9/11 Memorial at Kansas University, Friday through Monday, in front of Stauffer-Flint Hall: The 9/11 Memorial will consist of about 3,000 flags with the name of each person killed in the attacks. For more information, email suasocialissues@ku.edu.

• “Heroes Day,” Saturday: Kansas University Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little will read the preamble to the Constitution at halftime of the KU football game in honor of heroic actions during the 9/11 attacks. Fans will be invited to recite the preamble with Gray-Little. The game against Northern Illinois begins at 6 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Reduced-rate tickets are available for members of the military, police, fire and medical personnel, as well as teachers.

• “From Fear to Hope. Commemorating 9/11,” an interfaith event, 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Dole Institute, 2350 Petefish Drive. Jane Tedder, a survivor of the terrorist attacks, will be the featured speaker. The event also will include music and readings from a variety of community groups. A project by the Lawrence Arts Center, which will invite people to record their 9/11 memories, will also kick off at the event.

• Candlelight remembrance at the Campanile, 7:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Sunday. Elizabeth Berghout, associate professor of music, will present a carillon performance from the Campanile. Sara Rosen, KU senior vice provost; Lawrence Mayor Aron Cromwell; and Libby Johnson, student body president, will speak. Candles will be provided.

Also at KU, Danforth Chapel will be reserved for moments of reflection from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

In addition, the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center is asking the local community to pledge one volunteer hour for each of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 9/11 attacks.

The volunteer opportunity — Challenge 3,000 — kicks off Sunday and will run for six weeks.

Anyone interested in Challenge 3,000 can go online and “pledge” a certain amount of volunteer hours, and, for each hour, volunteers will be sent the names of the victims their hours will honor.
