AWOL soldier dies after standoff

? A Fort Riley soldier who did not show up for the second day of his court martial for raping a child died after a standoff with law enforcement officers.

Fort Riley officials say Sgt. Kirk Evenson died late Thursday at a hotel in Abilene.

Evenson had been reported absent without leave Tuesday when he did not show up for the court martial. He was convicted on Wednesday and sentenced to life without possibility of parole.

Fort Riley spokeswoman Lt. Col. Sophie Gainey says Evenson’s car was seen outside the Abilene hotel on Thursday. When officers arrived, a lengthy standoff began and Evenson.

Gainey says Evenson was shot when officers decided to enter the room and he “offered resistance.” Further details were not immediately available.
