25 years ago: Lawrence kindergartens welcome 700 new students

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 3, 1986:

  • It was a little too early for exact figures, but Lawrence school officials were optimistic that they were looking at an increase in enrollment of about 300 students this year. This number matched up with projections made the previous fall. The most crowding was occurring in kindergarten classes, where a district-wide total of 700 students was expected.
  • City commissioners had voted unanimously to commit $4 million to the southwest Lawrence bypass. These funds were to be added to another $4 million already committed by Douglas County as well as a potential $10 million approved by the U.S. House and facing the Senate this month.
