From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 2, 1986:

• Although no specific date had been set for their installation, new crossing signals were expected to make the busy intersection of 23rd and Louisiana safer for pedestrians. A Kansas Department of Transportation study in February had recommended pedestrian signals and painted crosswalks for all legs of the intersection, as well as the placement of a school crossing guard.
• Lawrence’s 17 elementary public schools were buzzing with activity this morning as the school year officially kicked off with a half-day of classes. Schwegler school was expecting 411 students — well above its capacity of 350. Voters in the school district had voted in May to approve an $8.6 million bond issue to expand both Schwegler and Kennedy schools and to build a new school in western Lawrence.
