40 years ago: Construction projects change profile of old Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 28, 1971:

  • A photograph showed some contrasts between the old and the new in the central part of town. The old locomotive in Central Park and the historic Eldridge House could be seen with the “comparatively new” post office and the public library building under construction at 8th and Vermont. Not shown in the photo were other new projects such as the swimming pool in the next block and the expanded Southwestern Bell Telephone building.
  • Twelve young students had found jobs through Central Junior High’s “Rent-a-Kid” program. With 76 more eager students still waiting, more jobs were needed from businesses and individuals in the community. On their applications, students had listed such strengths as babysitting, pet care, errands, and baling hay.
