Man pleads no contest in child sex case

An 18-year-old Lawrence man pleaded no contest Thursday to a felony for having a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl last May in Lawrence.

Morgan Rego entered the plea in front of District Judge Kay Huff to one count of having unlawful voluntary sexual relations with a child between the ages of 14 and 16. Prosecutors said the girl was 14 at the time, and Huff and defense attorney Greg Robinson said because the age difference between Rego and the girl was less than four full years he won’t be required to register as a sex offender. Robinson said as part of the plea agreement prosecutors won’t request any jail time and that he believed Rego would be eligible for probation in the case. Huff is scheduled to sentence Rego Dec. 16.
