90-year-old sorority pledge to be on ‘Anderson’ this week

? Bertie McConnell, the 90-year-old new pledge of a sorority at Washburn University, will be interviewed this week by Anderson Cooper.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that McConnell will return to Washburn this week and that Cooper will interview her by satellite for his talk show “Anderson” in front of the same sorority house where she would have attended events during World War II.

Last week McConnell, of Lawrence, celebrated her 90th birthday by accepting an invitation to join the women’s fraternity Zeta Tau Alpha at Washburn. McConnell was given an invitation to become a Zeta after postponing her dream to join the sorority in 1941 to help with the war effort.

She will officially join Zeta as an alumna on Dec. 4 when she is pledged and initiated.
