Lawrence city commissioners on Tuesday unanimously agreed to craft a new policy that will require signs alerting shoppers to special sales taxes charged in future Lawrence developments.

Commissioners followed Wichita in becoming at least the second city in the state to require businesses that receive government approval to charge a special sales tax to post signs notifying shoppers.

The policy will require businesses to “prominently display” a sign at each entrance. Commissioners will review options for the exact wording of the sign when the policy comes up for final approval. But all commissioners agreed the sign must clearly state the percentage amount of the special tax.

The sign requirement was part of a broader policy related to Community Improvement Districts and Transportation Development Districts, two types of districts that are allowed to charge special sales taxes to help pay for development expenses.
