Fix-It Chick: Wash windows in fall to get the most of winter light

Cleaning windows in the fall helps keep the home bright during the winter months and increases the passive solar heating abilities of each window. Here are a few helpful hints to assure the job gets done right.

Step 1: Choose an overcast day to clean the windows. Excessive sunshine can cause streaking.

Step 2: Remove screens to facilitate window access. Brush loose debris from the screens and spray them with the garden hose. Using a soft-bristle brush and warm, soapy water, scrub the screens on both sides then rinse again with the garden hose. Let the screens air dry.

Step 3: Use a bench brush or whisk broom to sweep loose debris and cobwebs away from the window surface and surrounding areas.

Step 4: Spray or sponge on a small amount of window cleaner. Use the solution sparingly; too much cleaning solution can cause streaking. For environmentally friendly cleaning, use a mixture of 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar, 2 cups warm water and 1/2 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. The liquid dish soap will help break down the residue left by previous cleaning solutions.

Step 5: Use newspaper or a squeegee to wipe away dirt and grime. Wipe windows vertically on the outside and horizontally on the inside. When using a squeegee, choose a heavy-duty squeegee with a thick, wide rubber blade.

Begin by wiping the squeegee horizontally across the top of the window. Wipe the squeegee blade and start each vertical stroke on the dry surface created by the first stroke. Overlap each downward stroke. End by running the dry squeegee horizontally along the bottom of the window.

Use newspaper or a micro fiber cloth to wipe away any residual cleaner.

Step 6: Clean the windows on the outside and inside, then inspect for streaks or missed spots.

Step 7: Replace the screens or install storm windows and enjoy the brilliance that sparkling windows add to every room in the house.
