From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 17, 1911:

“Grant township people always did have real ‘push’ to them. Now their latest achievement is the organization of a literary society, that will hold regular meetings. Literary societies are along the right line and many of them will doubtless be brought into life this winter. They furnish fine opportunities for letting the people of a neighborhood get together for an evening of social pleasure as well as literary profit. The school house as a social center, is one of the main issues being advanced all over the country at present.

“The Journal-World desires to give its hearty approval of the plan to have a night school in Lawrence. The public school buildings belong to all the people of Lawrence and not to the children of school age. The world is moving in the direction of using the school buildings for the purpose the people desire and Lawrence has in this night school movement taken the first step. We have been firing at too long range; we have been sending our prayers and our tears and our money for those too far away from home. The need is for home work…. Night school offers to the public only what belongs to the public. The use of the school buildings belongs to all the people.”
