40 years ago: Lawrence man charged after shooting death

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 16, 1971:

  • Lawrence resident Harry Glenn Vann, 29, was charged with second-degree murder following the death of Ruth Glover of 1317 Rhode Island. Following a shooting on East 11th Street between Rhode Island and New Hampshire shortly after 4 p.m. on a recent Friday afternoon, Vann had entered the Douglas County Jail saying, “I just shot a girl.” Vann had then handed a .38-caliber pistol to sheriff’s deputy Randall Pine. Another source reported that Vann and Glover had been dating but had recently broken up. Authorities were still searching for a motive in the case.
  • Movies showing in Lawrence theaters this week included “Bed and Board,” “Bless the Beasts and the Children,” “Skin Game,” and “Billy Jack.” The Sunset Drive-In offered a double feature, “The Return of Count Yorga” and “The Abominable Dr. Phibes.”
