25 years ago: Same-day surgery unit opens at LMH

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 16, 1986:

  • An estimated 2,000 patients a year were expected to use the new “same-day surgery department” at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The new unit replaced a smaller, more cramped area which LMH had outgrown. The new wing, which had cost $1,157,408, was opening for public tours on Sunday. Nearly half of all surgical cases were done on an out-patient basis in 1986.
  • Student organizers were referring to an upcoming concert as “Kansas University’s Woodstock.” The concert, held to benefit children of Vietnam War veterans, was to feature John Fogarty, Steven Stills, George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers as well as comedian John Paul. Proceeds were to go to a Washington, D.C., group called Paralyzed Veterans of America to establish a scholarship fund for children of veterans who had been disabled, killed, or missing in action in the Vietnam War.
