A car involved in a fatal accident on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 is hoisted onto a tow truck. The accident occurred on the South Lawrence Trafficway and its interchange with the Kansas Turnpike.

A 52-year-old Hiawatha man died Saturday after a two-vehicle accident on the South Lawrence Trafficway and its interchange with the Kansas Turnpike.

Mike Miner was driving north on the trafficway, when a car in the southbound lane turned left into the turnpike entrance, striking Miner’s 1989 Buick on the driver’s side door. Miner was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident west of Lawrence.

The passenger in Miner’s car, 58-year-old Kathy Miner, was taken to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

The driver of the other vehicle — a 2004 GMC Envoy — was 87-year-old Robert Petro, Topeka. He and his passenger, Barbara Petro, 87, Topeka, were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment of possible injuries.

The accident occurred about 8 p.m., and the report indicates all involved were wearing seat belts. The South Lawrence Trafficway also is Kansas Highway 10.

On Sunday morning, a nursing supervisor at Lawrence Memorial Hospital said Robert Petro was not treated at the hospital, and Barbara Petro was treated and released. A nursing supervisor at Kansas University Hospital could not give an update on Kathy Miner’s condition.
