Alcohol, medications cited in fatal 2010 crash on Kansas Highway 32

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, a 30-year-old Basehor man was under the influence of alcohol and medication when he and two other people were killed in an accident a year ago on Kansas Highway 32.

According to the accident report completed Oct. 4, Matthew Allen Nuzik’s blood-alcohol content was 0.123. The legal limit to drive in Kansas is 0.08.

The accident occurred on Oct. 10, 2010, as Nuzik was driving a blue Subaru east and attempted to pass another vehicle. His vehicle collided head-on with a silver Saturn passenger car driven by Jake Henry, 21. Stephanie Conn, 22, was a passenger in the Saturn. Both were Kansas University students.

All three people involved died at the scene.

A toxicology test found no alcohol or drugs in Henry’s system, according to the accident report.

The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. at a curve west of 214th Street.

A friend of Nuzik’s told troopers Nuzik had drunk about five shots of vodka over a seven-hour period in Lawrence before he started driving to Basehor. The friend said he didn’t think Nuzik was impaired to the degree it would be unsafe to drive home.

A drug screen of Nuzik’s blood detected anxiety medications diazepam and nordiazepam and temazepam, which is used to treat insomnia, according to the accident report.

The KHP said Nuzik’s improper passing and being under the influence of alcohol and medication were contributing circumstances in the crash.
