From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 10, 1911:

• “A mule team was hitched to a wagon standing in front of Pieratt’s blacksmith shop on south Massachusetts street. They became frightened at something and started to run. First they ran until they collided with a horse and buggy which was standing hitched at the curb…. Then the mules ran into and broke a telephone pole. Then one of the mules stopped and calmly surveyed the wreckage. The other, however, with visions of the open country in his mind, started at a run with his owner after him. He was finally caught.”
• “Woodrow Wilson for President. That was the purpose of a club formed today at the University by the college students. The first meeting of the club was held at noon today. Wilson has more supporters among the students than Taft, for in a canvass made a week ago the Wilson sentiment was very strong.”
• “Death last evening claimed one of the sweetest little girls in Lawrence when Lucile Breese, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Huge Breese, died. The child had just been considered seriously ill, having had severe throat trouble. Pneumonia developed suddenly…. There wasn’t a child in Lawrence more loved than Lucile Breese. She had a faculty of making friends everywhere and wherever she was she attracted people and won them to her. She would have been eight years old November 23. She was in the second grade at Central school…. It always seems hard when a child is taken, and sympathy extended to the parents out of place, but if this does any good, there is abundant sympathy given Lucile Breese’s parents.”
