25 years ago: Newly renovated Liberty Hall nears opening

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 9, 1986:

  • Local partnership Liberty Hall Associates announced that they were in the final stages of a long renovation of the former Lawrence Opera House. Partner David Millstein said that several generations of people were greatly interested in the project and the building itself. The doors were to open for the first public events this week with the showing of the film “A Room With a View.”
  • After lengthy debate at a recent meeting, Lawrence city commissioners voted 4-1, with Commissioner Mike Amyx opposed, to deny a request from the First Church of Christ Scientist, 1701 Mass., to build a 14-space parking lot on the south side of the church. In other actions, commissioners approved an addition to Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, 2000 Stewart Ave., to allow the house to accept 31 more members.
