From the Lawrence Daily Journal World for Oct. 4, 1971:

• Declaring it the biggest gambling den he had yet uncovered, Kansas Atty. Gen. Vern Miller showed reporters the items he and his raiders had seized at seven Great Bend private clubs and one Hoisington club. Miller exhibited 40 slot machines, 13 gaming tables, and about 3,000 illegal punch cards and promised a “variety of charges” against participants in the near future. He declined to give an estimate of how many persons would be charged, other than saying it would be “quite a few.”
• The attorney general also told of the recent arrest of a young man from Wichita who had hitched a ride with the wrong person. After being offered a ride on the Kansas Turnpike just outside Wichita, the hitchhiker had “lit up a marijuana cigarette, and asked [the driver] if he did drugs.” Unfortunately for the young man, the driver was one of Miller’s young, “hippy-looking” narcotics agents, who pulled over at a service area ostensibly for gasoline, but actually to telephone the highway patrol. The young man was arrested when the car was stopped near Topeka.
