University Bridge Club announces results of its Sept. 24 meeting with hosts Dan and Carolyn Harden.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Sept. 21 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Larry Weatherholt and Mark Osborn, first in A; Ed Howard and Bobby Patton, second in A; Grant Sutton and Catherine Blumenfeld, third in A and first in B; Karen Carlsen and Kit Carlsen, fourth in A, second in B, and first in C; and Marilyn Martin and Jack Flickinger, second in C.

East-West winners were David Piro and Paul Heitzman, first in A; John Fittell and Mary Fenlon, second in A; Barbara Haverty and Florine Creek, third in A, and first in B and C; Shari Krentzel and Eldon Herd, fourth in A; and Dick Shaffer and Ann Thompson, second in B.

The Kaw Valley Corral of Westerners International held the beginning of their fall programs on Sept. 13. David and Sue Dary of Norman, Okla., met with Harriett Wilson, Nola Pickett and Calder Pickett of the original founders. The Corral organizing meeting occurred in August 1980 with eight original members. Fifteen guests were introduced and welcomed Sept. 13 to dinner and the subsequent presentation.

Albert Sellen introduced David Dary as the guest speaker. He has written more than 20 books mostly on Western history. His presentation was about concerns of reduced interest on the value of history in our current school system and the fear of missing the value history provides our society of today and the future. Dary is best known as the author of, “Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas; An Informal History,” which he wrote while teaching at the School of Journalism at Kansas University.

The Betty Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 24 at the American Legion Post No. 14, 3408 W. Sixth St., Lawrence. After the DAR ritual and flag salute, Melodee Wallace did roll call and introduced guests. The flag minute, the president general’s message and the National defense report were read. Officer and Committee Reports were given. It was announced chapter member Pauline Reed died Sept. 22. It was announced also that chapter members will be participating in the 5th Annual Parade of Heroes on Oct. 6. The parade begins at France Family Drive at Village West, Kansas City, Kan. After the meeting, members carpooled to the Black Jack Battlefield & Nature Park for lunch and a tour of Black Jack. The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at the American Legion Post No. 14, 3408 W. Sixth St. Program will be given by Laura Easley, DAR Southwest Division program winner for 2011.
