40 years ago: KU students hired for neighborhood survey

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 1, 1971:

  • Lawrence City Planner Ron Short was assuring local residents that they had no need to be alarmed at the sight of college students snooping around their properties. Ten Kansas University students were part of a project sponsored by the city department to canvass the streets and alleys of Lawrence with pads of paper, noting locations of high weeds, deserted automobiles, and “other problems related to neighborhood development.” The information being collected was to be used to help the planning department improve area neighborhoods.
  • The Lawrence area had finished out September 1.85 inches behind the norm for precipitation. Only 2.06 inches of rain had fallen during the month, and strong gusty southerly winds were in the forecast for today.
