A defense attorney for an 18-year-old Kansas University student who faces a felony child endangerment case in juvenile court is in talks with prosecutors to try to resolve the case and any potential charges filed in an adult case.

Timothy Riling, who represents Trevor James Benedict, told a judge Wednesday that prosecutors were contemplating new charges and that the parties needed about 30 days to try to reach a deal. Prosecutors have accused Benedict in the juvenile case for an alleged incident last year involving his girlfriend at the time that occurred between Dec. 10 and Dec. 25 at the victim’s residence near Lecompton.

The victim was a girl who was 16 at the time. Benedict, who is from Perry, was 17 when the alleged offense occurred. A Douglas County Sheriff’s report listed “unconsciousness” as the victim’s injury, but authorities have provided no other details about the allegations. Benedict’s next juvenile hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 11.
