40 years ago: Abandoned baby returned to custody of parents

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 22, 1971:

The nine-month-old baby who had been left unattended for several hours on a chilly night last month had been returned to his parents, according to a spokesman for the Douglas County Juvenile Court. At the hearing, the baby’s extended family asked officials that the baby be returned to their custody. The baby had been left alone in a parked car in downtown Lawrence on a cold night in late October.

At tonight’s weekly meeting, the Lawrence City Commission would consider, among other items, a new sidewalk proposal for the Indian Hills neighborhood, the adequacy of the gas utility rates for Kansas Public Service Co., and a alternation in the fireworks ordinance which would change the legal days of explosives within the city limits from July 1-5 to July 2-4.

This was the morning that holiday decorations began to go up in the downtown area. In a front-page photograph, two city workers were shown hanging garlands and a large bell across Massachusetts Street.
