40 years ago: Fire hydrants sought for rest areas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 18, 1971:

The Kansas State Highway Commission was searching for old fire hydrants for a rest-area project. The plan was to install one or two old fire hydrants in “obscure corners” of highway rest areas to designate a section reserved for pets. The governor had informed the commission that no money was available to purchase old hydrants, said John Montgomery, director of highways. “Any city in Kansas that has any unwanted fire hydrants in their storage yards, please contact us,” Montgomery said.
