25 years ago: Music professor, orchestra director to win HOPE award

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 17, 1986:

Kansas University associate professor of music Zuohuang Chen had been voted the winner of the Honor for Outstanding Progressive Educator award. The HOPE award had been established by the KU senior class of 1959 and was given annually to the faculty member who received the most votes for teaching excellence from the senior class. Chen, a survivor of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, had come to the United States in 1981 and was now the director of the Kansas University Symphony Orchestra. “I am what Americans call a lucky dog,” Chen had told the Journal-World in a 1985 interview.
