Fort Riley ? German and Italian military liaisons will be at Fort Riley on Friday to honor World War II prisoners of war from their nations buried at the post cemetery.

There are 62 German and 11 Italian prisoners buried at the northeast Kansas post. The ceremony will include the laying of a wreathe on the graves.

Similar memorials are conducted each November across the country at military installations where German and Italian soldiers are buried. About 4,500 prisoners were held at Fort Riley between 1943 and 1946. Some of the prisoners stayed in Kansas following the war and were buried at the cemetery.

More than 600 POW camps were established in the United States during World War II. They housed 350,000 soldiers, equal to 35 army divisions.
