GRANTVILLE ? Workers are replacing 1,200 feet of damaged railroad track near Topeka where 32 cars from a pair of freight trains derailed.

No injuries were reported from the derailment just after 11 p.m. Monday. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports crews were aiming to have the tracks reopened by Tuesday night.

Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says 22 cars of a 142-car train hauling coal from Wyoming to Illinois went off the tracks first. A 122-car train bound from Kansas City, Kan., to Salina then hit the derailed cars. Ten empty cars of the westbound train then went off the tracks.

About 600 feet of track in each direction had to be replaced. Crews used heavy equipment to move the damaged cars and scoop up the spilled coal.
