Ottawa University announces dean’s list and honor roll recipients for the spring 2011 semester. Requirements for the dean’s list include being a full-time student, having earned a minimum of 24 semester hours over the preceding two semesters, and having a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5. Requirements for the dean’s honor roll include being a full-time student, having earned at least 12 semester hours during the preceding semester, and maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

David Debiasse and Tiffany Perdue, both of Lawrence, were named to the spring 2011 dean’s list at University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.

Debiasse’s academic work earned him a place on the 4.0 list. Perdue’s academic work earned her a place on the 3.5 to 3.99 list.

Maryl Sartin, Lawrence, earned a bachelor’s degree in global and regional studies-Europe during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont in Burlington.

Top scholars at Southwestern College, Winfield, were named to the spring 2011 dean’s honor roll. Area students who earned grade-point averages of at least 3.7 were eligible for the honor: Sarah Rommelfanger, Baldwin City; Jacob McGuire, Lawrence; and Elizabeth Bellinger, Oskaloosa.

Sarah Liberty Woodhead, McLouth, earned a bachelor’s degree with dual majors in biblical studies and biblical counseling May 7 from Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Mo.

Nearly 60 Emporia State University students were inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society at ESU during ceremonies May 13. Area students inducted: Natalie Rabiola, Lawrence; and Shannon Hassler, Ottawa.

Lawrence resident and Insight School of Kansas senior, Jacob Kennedy, received a surprise $500 Insight School of Kansas Faculty Scholarship June 4 at his high school graduation. The scholarship was created last year as an outlet for Insight teachers and staff to donate money to encourage and reward hard-working students.

Erin Levy, Lawrence, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in studio art, summa cum laude, May 15 during Beloit College’s 161st commencement exercises.

Katherine Slayton, Tecumseh, is one of four students selected to receive the Virginia Endly Memorial Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year. The Endly scholarship is a full-ride scholarship offered by Emporia State University.

Fort Hays State University announces area students named to the spring 2011 dean’s honor roll. The roll includes full-time undergraduate students who earned at least a 3.6 grade-point average. Jeff Cravens, Lawrence, was awarded fourth prize, a total of $500, in the annual Lawrence G. Blackmon Student Book Collecting Contest at Boston University. Cravens also won the accompanying Best Essay Contest garnering an additional $200. A law student scheduled to receive his Juris Doctor in 2012, Cravens was recognized for his collection of writings by and about incarcerated Americans and his essay entitled, “Reading Between the Bars: Books by and About Incarcerated Americans.”

The Lawrence Area Catbackers Association announces the 2011-2012 scholarship recipients: Kaitlyn Mosher, Free State High School; Cecilia Lehmann, Eudora High School; and Sarah Haley, Perry-Lecompton High School. This year the organization awarded a $1,000 scholarship to each of three Douglas County graduating seniors who will be attending Kansas State University in the fall.

Pratt Community College announces area students named to the spring 2011 dean’s honor roll by earning a grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.99. Area students include: Taylor Gentry, Lawrence; Brian Patton, Wellsville; and Capp Wood, Meriden.

Kansas State University Salina’s Flight Team came in eighth at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s National Safety And Flight Evaluation Conference and competition, May 16-21 in Dublin, Ohio. Host of the event was Ohio State University.

The team earned an invitation to the national competition by placing second in the association’s Region VI competition in October 2010.

The competition has 13 total events: seven flight events and six ground events. K-State Flight Team members placed in the top 20 in six events: ground trainer, IFR simulated flight, message drop, navigation, power-off landing and short-field landing.

Area members and their results include: Theron “Craig” Harper, senior in professional pilot, Eudora, 10th in power-off landing and 13th in message drop as drop master.

Taleisha Thomas, Overbrook, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in education during the spring 2011 commencement ceremonies at Midland University in Fremont, Neb.

Fifty-one students from the East Central District FFA were awarded their State FFA Degrees June 3 at the 83rd Kansas FFA State Convention.

The State Degree is the highest honor the Kansas FFA Association can bestow upon its members. Stephen Fawcett, a resident of Lawrence, and the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Professor of Applied Behavioral Science at Kansas University, was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Providence College during the College’s 93rd Commencement on May 15 in Providence, R.I.

Fawcett also is the director of the university’s Work Group for Community Health and Development (KU Work Group), a World Health Organization Collaborating Center and an affiliate of the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies at KU.
