40 years ago: TV game show wrong on Kansas question

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 10, 1971:

  • Under a statewide reapportionment plan under consideration in the Kansas House, the city of Lawrence would receive another representative. The city’s two districts would be re-divided to make three districts under the proposed plan, but the possible boundaries had not yet been considered.
  • Kansans were keeping the switchboard busy at NBC television. A contestant on the daytime game show “Hollywood Squares” had recently lost a game for her statement that the meadowlark was the state bird of Kansas. She had been told that her answer was incorrect and that the state bird was the Jayhawk, but of course her original answer was correct, and residents of the state were doing their best to set the network straight on the issue.
