40 years ago: Buckley speech at KU lacking in optimism

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 7, 1971:

  • “How does one discover that one is slipping into a dark age?” This was the key question posed by editor-columnist William F. Buckley Jr. when he addressed a capacity crowd at Kansas University. Buckley, who had fielded student questions after his speech, appeared to offer little optimism about the future of the nation if it stayed on its current path.
  • During a recent “free installation” period for the new company, Sunflower Cablevision had received service applications for 1,844 dwelling units in Lawrence, according to general manager Max Falkenstien. Under the 90-day offer, residents were able to save the usual $10 installation charge. Falkenstien said that he expected Sunflower to begin local cablecasting in early December.
