Lawrence Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered by the Lawrence First United Methodist Church, held its annual troop “Day at the Lake” on Aug. 6. The full day event was at Clinton Lake where a Wildlife and Parks officer taught a morning boating safety class. The Scouts then worked on other activities for the motorboating merit badge. T hey took advantage of the locale by working on the photography merit badge. In the afternoon, the scouts enjoyed boating, tubing and swimming activities. Participating scouts were Joe Cary, Lawrence Chen, Jacob Lashley, John Milburn, Max Briggs, Robert Newman, Thomas Peterson, John Peterson, John Anderson, Andrew Bireta, John McArthur, James Messer and Mark Smith. Participating adults were Dan Cary, Kevin Lashley, John Milburn, Ivy Briggs, Jace Newman, Kent Peterson and Rich Bireta.

Hidden Valley Fall Workday invites all Scouts and friends to help with native woods restoration projects in Mary’s Meadow and Dogwood Forest from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 13. Rain date will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 20. Adults with chainsaws are needed to cut firewood and continue to clear out the dense understory including the ever-invasive nonnative honeysuckle. Other projects include planting native grasses, mulch saplings, spreading compost and wetland maintenance. Tools will be provided, but wear durable clothing, enclosed shoes and bring gloves. Park by Evelyn’s Attic. There will be hot cocoa and s’mores for everyone. Hidden Valley is at Kasold and Bob Billings. Enter the camp off Bob Billings. Volunteers may take home cut wood. Boy Scout Troop 60, chartered to First Baptist Church in Lawrence, held their fall Court of Honor on Oct. 24. Ten rank advancements were earned as well as 63 merit badges.

The boys earned many of these badges at Camp Cornhusker in Nebraska, where the troop attended summer camp.
