40 years ago: Courthouse clock gets facelift

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 5, 1971:

  • Construction worker Leroy Neddeau, 1801 La., was shown in a front-page photograph as he was leaning out of the window on the face of the county courthouse clock at 11th and Massachusetts. “It’s not a dangerous job, but it’s not easy either,” said Neddeau as he described his task of repainting the hands, numerals, and faces of the four clock faces on the tower. He was expecting the assignment, which had last been completed 30 years previously, to take him about five working days.
  • Kansas Atty. Gen. Vern Miller was in the process of filing petitions in Barton County District Court seeking to close down six private clubs in Great Bend and one in Hoisington. During a raid on the clubs on Oct. 2, Miller had confiscated 40 slot machines, 13 gaming tables and a large quantity of punch cards.
