40 years ago: Band Day halftime show washed out by heavy rains

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 2, 1971:

Kansas University’s annual Band Day had had some serious competition from the weather. While the parade early in the day went as scheduled during fairly pleasant conditions, the scheduled halftime show at the KU-Oklahoma game had fallen victim to pouring rain. On the decision of their band leaders, most of the high school band members had left the Memorial Stadium before halftime. The “few remaining hardy musicians” had gathered in the bowl of the stadium to play the scheduled music without the marching and formations. This marked only the second time in the event’s 25-plus year history that weather had managed to interfere with the festivities.
