Wichita ? Even with their knees fatigued and swollen from a season’s worth of jumps, Lawrence High triple jumpers Austin Flory and Steven Hill had plenty of spring left.

Flory and Hill each set new personal-best distances in the triple jump and took third and seventh, respectively, at the Class 6A state track and field championships at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Flory, a senior who took seventh at state last year, hit his mark of 45 feet, 1 inch on his first jump in the prelims, while Hill reached 43-41/2 on his final jump in the prelims.

“I was just excited,” said Flory, whose knees already had begun to swell before he could accept his medal on the podium. “I was so pumped up.”

“I’m psyched,” Hill said. “Just, first year coming to state, and medaling is just over the top.”

Bolstered by Saturday’s efforts from Flory and Hill and Blake Hocking’s shot put title Friday, the LHS boys team finished in 15th in the team race with 17 points.

Flory leaped 44-21/4, 43-81/2 and 44-8 in his three finals attempts, but his first jump carried him to third, a few inches shy of Wichita Heights standout Taylor Cross’ mark of 45-43/4.

Hill had virtually nothing left in the finals and scratched his two final attempts because of soreness in his knees. Still, the junior sported a big grin before taking the podium in his first appearance at state.

“He can come back and easily get first place next year,” Flory said of Hill. “He just needs to work hard this summer and during the season.”

In the boys high jump, LHS senior Scott Dunlap took eighth after clearing the bar at 6 feet. He missed in all three attempts at 6-2.

The girls 4×800 relay team — Michala Ruder, Alexis Schiebler, Emily Davidson, Payton Covert — finished 14th in 10:22.37.

A day after capturing gold in the shot put, Hocking was disappointed in his showing in the discus. Hocking, who came in seeded ninth (140-2), mustered a throw of only 127-3 and settled for 14th place.

“It was my worst day (at discus) of the year,” Hocking said, before pausing and managing a smile. “I’d be super down if not for (yesterday), though.”
