From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 29, 1971:

• The first shovelful of sod had been turned over at Edgewood Park, officially starting the city’s first municipal low-rent housing project. The $2 million project, to be located at 18th and Haskell, was to have 130 units of general occupancy low-rent housing and was being financed by a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
• Upcoming Memorial Day services at Oak Hill Cemetery were to highlight the dedication of a 12-foot square granite memorial to all veterans. Wayne Strong, commander of Lawrence’s Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14, and John Purcell, past commander, were to dedicate the memorial and present it to the city. The names of veterans buried in the veterans’ plot were to be read aloud.
• About 60 acres of land had been annexed by the city of Tonganoxie, in all directions from the original townsite.
