From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 28, 1986:

• Local farmers were still discovering the full damage of a hard freeze that had taken place in April. Douglas County agricultural extension agents were now saying that about 40 percent of the county’s strawberry crop and almost all the county’s tree fruit were destroyed. On the bright side, the fruit that had escaped the freeze was “very high in quality,” said agent Jack Lindquist. But that was small consolation to Floyd and Becky Ott, whose total crop from their 14 cherry trees was a sparse handful of fruit.
• Rep. Jessie Branson, D-Lawrence, formally announced that she would seek a fourth two-year term in the Kansas House of Representatives. It was not yet known with certainty if she would have a Republican opponent in the next election, but Chris Miller, a 35-year-old local attorney, confirmed that he was considering a run for the 44th District seat in the House.
