From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 25, 1911:

• “The government car, completely equipped for mine rescue work, which is in Lawrence today is not purely a demonstration car. It is designed for practical service and should a mine accident occur in this territory the car would be ordered directly to the scene. It is equipped with every device for successful rescue work and its Pullman berths make very comfortable hospital cots. The car, which is one of six maintained by the government, is under the supervision of the department of mines, a new federal bureau established less than a year ago. It is equipped with all imaginable devices for conducting rescue work after mine disasters. There are safety lamps, first aids, oxygen helmets, fire extinguishers and gas repelling apparatus.”
• “A state official is in Lawrence today issuing warrants for a number of sensational arrests. The recent inquisition of the county attorney revealed law violations along lines heretofore unsuspected and it is arrests of this nature which will be made tonight or tomorrow. The state official has quietly secured conclusive evidence of the guilt of the individuals concerned in the flagrant violations, and will prosecute them unrelentingly.”
