From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 24, 1971:

• Three Lawrence residents pleaded innocent in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., to charges of conspiring to import 66 pounds of hashish. A grand jury indictment charged two of the residents with having purchased a camper in Germany and then accepting delivery of it in Houston before driving it to Lawrence. The indictment further charged that a quantity of hashish had been hidden in the camper.
• Two severe thunderstorms had hit Lawrence just hours apart, damaging property, cutting power lines, and adding another three-fourths of an inch of rain to land that was already saturated. Marble-sized hail was reported to have accompanied the storm, but no funnel clouds had been reported. The local forecast read, “With rabbit’s foot clenched firmly, the weatherman is predicting no more rain in northeast Kansas through Thursday.”
