From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 22, 1911:

• “The Lawrence Water Company is contemplating the expenditure of from $40,000 to $50,000 this summer in improving and increasing the efficiency of its system. Probably no other town in the state has so efficient a system nor one furnishing so pure a quality of water. The improvements contemplated are designed to protect the purity of this water supply against floods and drought, simultaneously with augmenting its extent. The great flood of 1903 followed by several others more recent, were of sufficient height to menace the water reservoirs and impress the company with this danger to steady operation.”
• “After months of delay, it is now probable that a new bridge across the Kaw river at Grantville will be built by Shawnee and Jefferson counties. The new structure will cost about $21,000.”
• “D. W. Cowden’s big six-cylinder car was badly damaged as a result of the high wind which prevailed in Salina all this afternoon. Mr. Cowden had gone to the Country club ground east of the city and stopped his car on top of a hill. He forgot to throw on the emergency brake. A gust of wind started the car backwards. It rolled down the hill backwards, paying no attention at all to the speed limits of the city. The car stopped when it struck a big tree but the back of the machine was caved in and badly damaged.”
