100 years ago: LHS seniors enjoy year-end picnic

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 19, 1911:

  • “Mrs. Sam Houston Carr of Parsons, Kansas, who has shaken hands with every president from Martin Van Buren to Taft, called on the president this morning and paid her respects. The old lady is related to the famous Tennessean-Texan, Sam Houston. She came to Washington to visit her son who is employed in the Department of Justice.”
  • “High School Notes. — Yesterday afternoon the Senior boys gave a picnic at Lake View to the Senior girls. The picnicers left the high school at two o’clock in hay racks but before they had gone two blocks they were delayed for a time with a broken wheel and to this nature turned in and gave them a little shower to pass their time away more easily.”
  • “The last few days have been busy ones for the Seniors who are to take part in the Commencement exercises and in the Class Day program. Most of the speeches and orations have been learned and now the students are busy delivering them to Miss Metcalf who acts as critic.”
  • “There are only two more weeks of school left now and then what a wail of praise will go up from many of the tired students. The weather has been so warm the past week that every morning there are scores of students who can hardly stay the six hours without falling asleep.”
