From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 18, 1986:

• Lawrence school district officials were looking at their newest school site with an optimistic view. The site didn’t look like much in 1986 – “a 15-acre tract in a roadless area. Muddy. In the woods. Just south of a cornfield,” as the article described it. But officials were seeing the site near 15th and Wakarusa as being surrounded by homes by the time construction was finished, with “the now dead-end Inverness Drive running past it.” The voters of Lawrence soon were to decide on an $8.6 million bond issue to pay for the new school and to expand three others – Schwegler, Kennedy, and either Sunset Hill, Centennial, or Hillcrest. Some local taxpayers were against the bond issue, feeling that it was premature or saying that developers simply wanted to sell homes and needed a school in the area to make the lots more attractive.
• Lawrence firefighters had concluded the on-site phase of their investigation into a recent fire, but they still hadn’t determined the cause of the blaze. The fire, which had taken place at an east Lawrence furniture store, had caused $300,000 in damage and the building and contents had been deemed a total loss.
