The Lawrence Humane Society received some extra help Sunday, as members of the Lawrence Jewish Community Center teamed up to volunteer with the animals and work on projects around the shelter.

Leah Terranova and her two sons, Oliver and Giova Rubenstein, ages 6 and 4, spent their afternoon building an outdoor rabbit enclosure, while other family teams started other projects or played with the shelter animals. Another group of volunteers would be coming shortly, while some other members of the center would be cleaning the grounds at Clinton Lake.

Terranova said the volunteer work was an organized mitzvah, which is the Jewish tradition of doing a good deed. Group members compared their day of service to the annual Day of Caring event from last month.

“We’re just helping out,” Terranova said simply.

Members of the Lawrence community stopping by to pitch in is an appreciated, and common, occurrence at the humane society, said volunteer coordinator Elliot Werner, who supervised the workers Sunday.

“We see a lot of that out here,” he said.
