From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 15, 1986:

• Kansas Public Service, the natural gas utility for the city of Lawrence, had received word that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission had approved a rate decrease by its gas supplier. The reduction was to be passed directly to the customers, whose rates were expected to drop to a level comparable to those in 1981.
• The manager of Clinton State Park had announced a three-day “silver centennial celebration” to take place at the park in late August and early September. Entertainment, crafts, antiques and food booths were expected to be part of the festivities, which were in celebration of the 125th birthday of Kansas.
• Lawrence residents were invited to bring their best and brightest kites, along with a big ball of string, to South Park on an upcoming Sunday afternoon to celebrate “Kite Day.” The event, sponsored by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, was to offer awards for most colorful kite, highest flyer, and “most persistent kite flyer.” Participants were encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and make an afternoon of it.
