• The Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center announces that Rosemary Corbin has joined the center as a child and family therapist. Corbin is a licensed master’s level psychologist.

Sarah Rouse has joined the center as a child and family therapist. Rouse is a licensed master’s social worker and was previously with St. Francis Community Services as a case manager.

Amy Myers, who has been with the Bert Nash Center for the past five years, was recently promoted to the position of specialty services coordinator.

• Pinnacle Career Institute — Lawrence Campus will be honored as an ACICS Honor Roll School at the 2011 ACICS Leadership Conference and annual meeting to be held June 4 at the Gaylord Texan Hotel & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.

ACICS stands for Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The award singles out programs and schools that excel by the standards set forth by the ACICS. The PCI – Lawrence Campus will be honored in the school category.

• John Schmidt, Lawrence, was recognized by Cottonwood Inc.’s Joblink program for completing 10 years of service at University Book Shop during the April 25 Cottonwood Classies at Free State High School.

• More than 90 optometric assistants attended the 2011 Kansas Optometric Association’s Convention and Seminar held April 28-29 in Wichita. Assistants attending were able to receive up to eight hours of continuing education. Among those attending was Steve Buren of Lawrence.

• The Bourgeois Pig in Lawrence was named No. 5 in the top 50 best college coffee shops in America by Complex Magazine.

• Lawrence-based EMR Inc. has been named one of the area’s Top 10 top small businesses by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

EMR, 3200 Haskell Ave., is an environmental consulting and engineering firm that does work all over the country. The company helps clients deal with environmental regulations, toxicology issues, industrial hygiene, environmental remediation, military munitions plants, natural resource issues and a host of other issues.

• Henrys’ Plant Farm, 248 N. 1700 Road, Lecompton, will celebrate 30 years in business with a birthday party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Refreshments will be served, and there will be live music in the afternoon.

• David L. Beckley, president of Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss., presented a certificate to Dorthy Pennington during the April 29 trustee meeting held prior to commencement activities. Pennington, Rust Class of 1968, has served on the board of trustees for nine years. She is an associate professor of African and African-American studies and communication studies at Kansas University.
