LHS softball camp: Lawrence High will hold a softball camp at its new field on campus from May 31 to June 3 for students entering grades 3-12. LHS wrestling fundraiser: Lawrence High’s wrestling team will hold a golf tournament fundraiser June 3 at Alvamar Public. For information, email to randy@sunflowerkidswrestling.com.

LHS wrestling camp: Lawrence High will host a summer wrestling camp June 13-15 at LHS. There will be two sessions (morning and afternoon) daily and is for grades 1-12. For more information, email randy@sunflowerkidswrestling.com.

Orchards couples league: A couples golf league will begin play at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Orchards. Once a month there will be a cook-out at the clubhouse following play. Couples interested please call Ed White, 843-7456.

Orchards junior league: A junior golf league for boys and girls ages 10 to 14 will start at 9 a.m. on June 8 at the Orchards. Play will continue until school starts. A reasonable skill level required to join. Entry fee is $10 and green fees are $8. for nine holes. Those that join will be allowed this same green fee through-out the season. Football camp: The Free State High and Lawrence High youth football camp (for grades 3-8) will run June 27-29 at FSHS. South hoops camp: South Junior High girls basketball camp for next school year’s incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will be 3-5:30 p.m. May 31-June 3. Contact Jay Deiser at 760-0654 or jdeiser@usd497.org for information.

Trail races: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the second-annual “Hawk 50-Mile and Marathon Trail Runs” on Saturday on Clinton Lake’s North Shore Trails. Online entry is available at www.Lawrencetrailhawks.com. The Lawrence Trail Hawks are Lawrence’s original trail- and ultra-running club. The race features T-shirts for all entrants, awards for all finishers and a cookout for runners, families and friends, beginning about 11 a.m.

Lawrence swim team and lessons: Ad Astra Area Aquatics is a competitive year-round swim team that offers practices for ages 6-18 throughout the week. AAAA is always accepting new members. Swim academy: Registration is open for the Aquahawk Swim Academy swim-lesson program. The Aquahawk Swim Academy is designed to introduce new and beginner swimmers to the water, teach basic water safety and swimming skills to swim for fun or competitively. Wrestling club: Practices for the Douglas County Gold FS/GR Wrestling Club will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the South Gym (Eigth and Chapel streets) in Baldwin City. LHS boys basketball workouts: Lawrence High’s boys basketball workouts will be held 2:30-4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, June 6-July 13, at LHS. KU soccer camps: The Kansas University Soccer Weekicks Camp will take place from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. June 6-10; the day camp from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 6-10 for grades 4-12; the girls residential and girls team camp has two sessions. Session I is from July 15-18, all day (grades 4-12). Session II is from July 19-22, all day (grades 4-12). Aquahawks: The Lawrence Aquahawks Swim Club is accepting new members. Interested new swimmers may come to the Aquahawks practices Monday-Fridays, 4-5:30 p.m., at the Indoor Aquatic Center. Coaches are available during this time to work with new swimmers and talk to parents about swimming for the Lawrence Aquahawks. Bulldog volleyball camp: Brenda Shawley and the Baldwin Junior High coaching staff will host its Bulldog Volleyball Camp for girls in grades 4-8 from June 6 to 9 at the Baldwin High gym The first session, for grades 4-6, is from 9-10:30 a.m., and the second session, for grades 7-8, will be 10:30 a.m.-noon. Southwest Volleyball Camp: The Southwest Volleyball Camp will run from 9-11:30 a.m., May 31-June 3 at the Southwest Middle School gym. Called To Greatness League: The Called To Greatness 3-on-3 Summer Basketball League will be held Monday through Thursday each week between June 6 and June 30 at the Holcom Park Recreation Center. Each division meets twice a week for brief instruction followed by 3-on-3 games. Local fisherman second: Lawrence’s Steve Ortiz placed second at the Heartland Elite Championship fishing tournament. Ortiz brought 19.42 pounds to the scales and took big-bass honors with a 5.65 pounder.

Wedge winner: Roy Wedge, an MIT freshman from Lawrence, won the 10,000-meter run at the New England NCAA Div. III Championships on Friday in Cambridge, Mass., in a time of 31:47, to help MIT to a second-place finish in the meet.

Orchards ace: Orchards had two holes-in-one on the same hole recently. Brian Alexander recorded an ace on the 97-yard No. 8 hole on April 23. Alexander used an 8-iron for the ace, which was witnessed by Brook Havens. On May 7, Marcelino Cortez used a 9-iron to ace the same hole. Jacob Farrar witnessed.

LHS cheer signee: Jasmine Brown has signed with Ottawa University’s spirit team. Brown was a three-year letter-winner in cheerleading at LHS.

FSHS grad Petz honored: Free State High product and Washburn baseball player Andy Petz was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team and advanced to the national ballot for Academic All-America honors. Petz, a 2007 FSHS grad, has a 4.0 grade-point average in physics. He leads the Ichabods with a .331 average and 41 RBIs, which ranks second in the MIAA.

Girls basketball camp: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State High girls coach Bryan Duncan will host a basketball camp for girls entering grades 5-8 next school year.
