40 years ago: Work begins on athletic fields for Central Junior High

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 12, 1971:

  • A photograph showed many trees on the Central Junior High School lot and the old McAllaster School lot being torn down. The trees were being removed from the sites as construction began on the new athletic fields for the junior high. Rhode Island Street was to be closed off and the two lots leveled and joined. The athletic area, which was being built in cooperation with the city, was to include a football field, softball diamond and tennis courts. Completion was expected in time for the Fall 1971 school term.
  • The subject of a recent story in the Journal-World was bringing a suit against The World Company, publishers of the newspaper. John A. Tredo was claiming that the two articles were “false, malicious and defamatory” and had caused him to be “held up to public scorn, obloquy and ridicule and that as a consequence he [had] suffered substantial loss of business and good will” at his restaurant at 944 Massachusetts Street. The articles had reported various facts on the welfare assistance received by Tredo and the actions taken by the County Welfare Director and the county commissioners.
