25 years ago: Retiring South principal surprised by honor powwow

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 12, 1986:

  • As part of the retirement festivities for South Junior High Schools’ principal Orvel Criqui, several Native American groups surprised him with an honor powwow in the school’s gym. South’s Native Americans, the Haskell Inter-Tribal Club and representatives from Haskell Indian Junior College participated in the event, which was highlighted by an honor dance. Several guests of honor also attended the powwow, where gifts were presented to Criqui.
  • Several east-central Kansas towns were preparing to compete with other states for the Superconducting Super Collider project, which was still in its preliminary design stage at the U.S. Department of Energy. Representatives from the towns of Emporia, Ottawa, Burlington, Garnett, Lebo and Waverly had met with Joseph Harkins, director of the State Water Office and head of the state’s task force on monitoring the progress of the project and promoting Kansas as the site.
