From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 11, 1911:

“Profiles have been completed for the magnificent new four story hotel and theatre which James Baer, Guy Helvering and their associates propose to erect on Warren and Vermont. The profiles show a massive grey brick building, faced with terra cotta…. [It] will have a 120 foot frontage on Vermont and 110 feet on Warren. Its estimated cost is $125,000.”

“At a special council meeting called for that purpose last night the contract to pave Alabama street was assigned to Joe Ramsey. This is a contract awarded last summer to Haskins & Ramsey but upon which work has never been started. Owing to financial difficulties the firm has never been able to complete their contract, and to avoid losing their posted guarantee, the junior member of the firm agreed to take over and fulfill the contract.”

“The city has a quantity of good fire wood which it will dispose of at very reasonable figures. Broeker asked for instructions regarding the disposition of the timber which has accumulated by the trimming out of storm-twisted trees in Central park. He told the council that there was a great deal of the wood, and that some parties had offered to buy it. He believed that it could be sold at a medium price and save the city the expense of hauling it away from the park.”
