From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 10, 1986:

• Spinach and snow peas were among the fresh produce available to local shoppers at the opening of the 11th season of the Lawrence Farmers’ Market. Heavy rains didn’t deter several shoppers from arriving at the parking lot in the 1000 block of Vermont in advance of the 7 a.m. starting time. After Carolyn Shy rang the official bell to start the day’s sales, merchants greeted the stalwart early risers with early garden crops and, as one shopper said, “kind of a social hour to say ‘hi’ to the people here.'”
• Those who slept in this morning in 1986 might have awoken to the sound of dime-sized hail and heavy rains, part of a system that had arrived in the Lawrence area shortly before 6 a.m. The storm left 1.3 inches of rain by about 7 a.m., flooding some streets and leaving a huge pond-sized puddle in Central Park. No damage was reported from the storm, which had struck without any warning from the National Weather Service.
