25 years ago: New slogan created for Lawrence tourism

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 6, 1986:

  • Some Lawrence businesses served by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway were at risk of having their shipments and deliveries affected by a recent strike. Thousands of engineers, conductors, and other workers for the railway had entered into the third day of their strike, and there were no talks yet scheduled between the railroad and its union employees. Some of the Lawrence businesses served by the railway included Quaker Oats, TRW, Packer Plastics, Lawrence Paper Co., and the K-Mart Distribution Center.
  • The slogan “Lawrence, Kansas: Not Just Another Pretty Place” had been selected by the Chamber of Commerce to promote local tourism and convention business. The slogan, to be used as a logo on promotional advertisements and pamphlets, was to be introduced to the Lawrence city commissioners at their next meeting.
